Hand and Bucket (detail)
box 8 x 10 x5" depth

The back "wall" of the box is a glass plate with a holographic emulsion on the back. The image is only seen when a halogen light is directed on it at a specified angle. The hologram is produced first as a master image on an optics table with laser light using the real objects. The interference patterns produced by the laser beams (object beam and reference beam) encode the image in the emulsion. The hologram is not an illusion - it is an actual volume of light.
